Lyme Regis and Devon Countryside

During the half term break we headed from Hampshire to East Devon for a weeks holiday.
On the Monday the weather was cloudy but it wasn't raining so we made our way to one of our favourite destinations - Lyme Regis in Dorset!
Having been brought up in Angelsey which is surrounded by the sea I have to have a regular fix of seeing the sea at close quarters.

On the sea front there is a row of these lovely houses painted in the palest of pinks with turquoise doors. I wish that I could take a peek inside and envy those who live so close to the sea. I would love to be able to look out of one of the bedroom windows at night and be able to see and hear the waves crashing against the shingle. Something reminiscent of a Daphne du Maurier novel.

I also have something about bicycles. Whenever I see one abandoned like this and it's been raining or is about to rain that song "Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head" from the film "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" comes to my mind when Robert Redford and Katharine Ross are riding a bicycle - everything seems to be carefree and easy - nothin's worryin' me!

Raindrops keep fallin' on my head
And just like the guy whose feet are too big for his bed
Nothin' seems to fit
Those raindrops are fallin' on my head, they keep fallin'

So I just did me some talkin' to the sun
And I said I didn't like the way he got things done
Sleepin' on the job
Those raindrops are fallin' on my head, they keep fallin'

But there's one thing I know
The blues they send to meet me won't defeat me
It won't be long till happiness steps up to greet me

Raindrops keep fallin' on my head
But that doesn't mean my eyes will soon be burnin' red
Cryin' not for me
'Cause I'm never gonna stop the rain by complainin'
Because I'm free
Nothin's worryin' me

The threat of rain didn't last long and soon we were being pestered into buying an iced lolly - a FAB no less. I used to love these myself when I was little, especially the hundreds and thousands on top!

I had never seen the sea so far out before and I liked the mirrored effect of the buildings in the sea water.

Another bicycle.

After a splendid day on the seafront we visited the second hand bookshop and purchased a few books to read. We then visited a shop called "Susie Cole" which sells many vintage items - inside an old dolls pram there was a toy mother rabbit with her baby - really cute. Pester power was being strongly exercised and we succumbed. I will show them to you in a later posting once they have been prised off Our Daughter's bed to be photographed!

After a tour of the shops we made our way back to the car park and headed back to East Devon using the back roads - I much prefer the scenic route to major roads - the hedgerows were full of snowdrops.
It is much easier on these roads to stop and take photos!

As we were ambling along we saw this bridge in the distance and stopped the car for a short walk. The sound of the water running downstream and the birds twittering away in the trees - priceless.

Oh, I do love the Devon countryside - those rolling hills and big vast green spaces.

And we had the place all to ourselves.

Our Daughter saw this abandoned tyre and immediately plonked herself in it - she declared it - "truly comfy".
"If we put a cushion in the bottom it would make a nice seat for the garden!"

There's not a lot you can say to that, is there?

Until next time.

June.

  1. Sounds like you had a lovely half term, good to hear! I love Devon too and agree that it's so much nicer to drive along the quieter, slower roads and take all that beauty in. Lovely photos, thank you

  2. Funny,we were just looking at OUR Devon holiday pictures last night.Looks like you had a nice break. On one of our Devon trips we stopped in Lyme Regis but it was an August bank holiday, not the best time to see it!(like you we like to go where we have the place to ourselves),but I did discover a fab antique/collectables shop, which I could have spend hours browsing in if it had not been for Bella and Mr Boo waiting for me! :0)
